The City of Maitland's Commitment to Going Green
The City of Maitland is committed to reducing the carbon footprint we as a City make on our envrionment. The City of Maitland is currently in the process of becoming a Green City, as certified by the Florida Green Builders Coalition (FGBC). The FGBC designates Green Cities and Counties for outstanding environmental stewardship. The program focuses on improving environmental performance through waste reduction, water conservation, air quality improvements and many other criteria. The process of becoming a Green City is an opportunity to improve existing programs, start new programs and set an example to the community in order to improve environmental sustainability throughout Maitland. All departments within the city will be challenged to fulfill the environmental mission of the city.
This Web site will provide you with up to date information on the City's initiatives and provide a timeline of the efforts to obtain Green certification.
Green City Certification
The FGBC Green Local Government Standard designates Green Cities and Green Counties for outstanding environmental stewardship. It is expected that certified green city and county governments will not only gain recognition and publicity, but also function in a more efficient manner through better internal communication, cost reductions, and effective risk and asset management. FGBC is actively working towards the availability of incentives that are based on compliance with this standard. (From the Florida Green Building Coalition website: www.floridagreenbuilding.org ). Green development is a land use planning concept that includes consideration of community-wide or regional environmental implications of development, as well as site-specific green building concepts. This includes city planning, environmental planning, architecture, and community building.

What Happens To All That Water That Goes Into Our Sewers?
Maitland's Wastewater Department is comprised of six staff members who are responsible for the city's 39 lift stations and the 24 mini-lift stations located in the Northwind neighborhood. This system transports approximately 1.3 million gallons of sewage, per day to either the City of Orlando's Iron Bridge Treatment Plant or to the City of Altamonte Spring's Swofford Treatment Facility. At least one staff member is on call 24-hours per day in the event that response is needed due to resident concerns, equipment malfunctions, or power outages.
